Connecting To The OMNI VI Interface Port
Before proceeding with this project you should read Chapter 5 of the OMNI VI Operator's Manual.
The Interface Port on the back panel of the OMNI VI has 2 functions. First, it is a 2-way communication path between your home computer and the OMNI VI. Secondly, it provides connections so that a remote tuning knob can be connected to the rig. We will use these lines to remotely control the tuning of the OMNI by articulating these lines electronically rather than with a tuning knob. We will use 3 lines for communication with the home computer and 3 for the tuning function. There are at least 2 ways that the connections could be established. Page 5-1 of the manual shows you how to connect the 3 wires for data communication. It does not show you how to connect the remote tuning. The 3 pins that you need are 1,6, and 8. The other end of these wires will connect to a 3.5 mm stereo plug. 1 - Ground/Sleeve, 6 - Tip, 8 - Ring.
